Midsummer

blomma3

Traditionally, if I was in Sweden today, I would most likely have the day off work and would have started the bypicking flowers from the fields; mainly cornflowers, poppies and cow parsley so I could tie myself a headband.

Then in the afternoon there would be cake, most likely a strawberry gateau. And in the evening there would be a smorgasbord of pickled herring, smoked salmon or gravadlax, new potatoes with dill, meatballs, sourcream and chives, maybe a matjes cheesecake and so on. To finish strawberries and cream.

Quite a lot of people have the traditional food for lunch and a barbecue in the evening, but although I’m not a huge fan of herring, that is not how I roll. There will of course also be plenty of snaps going around and we would sing snaps songs.

At some point during the afternoon or evening you would also dance around the may pole silly style singing children’s songs. And then party until really late as it is the shortest day of the year and the sun barely sets in Sweden.

This year, I’m in the UK and won’t really celebrate midsummer at all. Instead I’m going to an army ball in London, complete with chocolate fountains, fireworks and The Great Gatsby theme. Tomorrow and Sunday I have a hen do down in Kent where we will be glamping, playing silly games and drinking plenty of wine (I hope).

So regardless of what you’re up to, I wish you a Happy Midsummer!

To Skåne, Sweden!

blom4 I’m flying home to Skåne, Sweden tonight (well, technically I land in Denmark but a short jump across the bridge and I will be in Sweden) to attend my dear friends Helena and Johan’s wedding tomorrow. It will be lovely to share their special day with them, see some friends and spend time with my dear parents. And eat some of my mummy’s food. Needless to say I will be too tired to cook on Sunday after the wedding festivities the day before…

Have a nice weekend you too!

Weekend update!

M

A happy Maria at the pub last night

It’s been a long work week (for me at least) but Friday is finally upon us. The sun is shining and I have friends from home visiting. When they arrived last night we dropped off their bags at the hotel and went to my local pub for (delicious) food, wine and a catch-up. Today while I’m at work Maria, Daniel and little Otto are enjoying the sunshine in Hyde Park and shopping a bit.

Tonight we’re going to chill out at home and I’m planning the menu as we speak. Since it’s great weather today I think the right thing to do is to fire up the barbecue and eat lots of nibbles while waiting for the meat to cook.

Tomorrow we’re probably going shopping on the Kings Road and having dinner in Chelsea at this child-friendly restaurant and I am sure we will have a nice lunch somewhere on Sunday before they leave for the airport.

Fingers crossed the amazing weather will hold. Bon weekend!

Friday update

6

Two weeks back in the office and Christmas already feels distant. We’re already halfway through January and it isn’t nearly as bad as I thought. Probably because the weather is still mild and work is keeping me busy.

This past week I have had the company of a terrible head cold so haven’t been the usual busy bee, but managed to catch up with a friend over wine and nibbles and go out for dinner. Tonight we have some work drinks and tomorrow I’m off to Sweden for a (literally) flying visit to celebrate that my best friend is now a physio therapist! Congratulations Emma!

Have a great weekend!

December fun

xmas2

I’m never prepared for how busy December is or how quickly the days whiz by. One week into the month and I am already tired and haven’t got much time to blog because of all the fun that’s happening.

This week I’ve got most my Christmas shopping done, been to a Christmas party at a friend’s house and tried a great pop-up restaurant in Chelsea.

Tonight I’m having a quiet night in to catch up on sleep and recharge and then tomorrow I’m going shopping and having dinner with some friend and on Sunday I’m visiting my friend Gaby’s new flat.

Then it’s only two more weeks to go until my Christmas break. So little time, so much fun to squeeze in… Have a nice weekend!

Thanksgiving!

Tonight I have been invited to a Thanksgiving dinner with a few American friends and although it is my third Thanksgiving meal I am quite excited. I love taking part of other cultures and learn new customs. Plus the food at Thanksgiving is delicious!

We’re all bringing a few things each to make it easier on a week night and my contribution is Brussels sprouts with bacon and pecan pie.

Apart from eating until my tummy aches tonight I’m having a semi quiet weekend with lots of sleeping, catching up on my favourite series and a lunch with a good friend.

Have a lovely weekend!

Happy Friday!

toffee2

Even though I’ve been home most nights this week I still feel incredibly tired. I think perhaps my subconscious is trying to tell me to relax since it is just a few weeks to go until some time off.

It’s a good thing that I love all the Christmas preparations so I’m sure this next month will fly past.

These evenings in I have been cooking and baking quite a lot, and afterwards rewarded myself with an episode of the amazing Swedish TV series Niklas Mat. It is unfortunately in Swedish and no longer available at SVT play, but I love the show. Niklas Ekstedt is a renowned Swedish chef with several restaurants in Stockholm and in this series he does work practice for five days at a few well-known restaurants around the world and on the last day at each place he cooks a dish for the head chef who gets to decide if it is good enough to be added to the restaurant’s menu.

Anyway… It’s Friday and I’m going out in Soho with a few friends tonight and even though I’m tired I’m really looking forward to it. Tomorrow I have a long Skype date planned with my bestie so we can put the world right so it will be a good weekend.

Have a nice one!

Christmas is not so far away…

IMG_5644

It is only about seven weeks to go until I go home for Christmas. I am so excited this year to have two whole weeks at home with family and friends. Last year I ran around like a crazy person trying to fit as much in as I could and ended up with the flu for several days and lots of fun plans cancelled. Lesson learnt, so this year I have only made a few plans and intend to listen to my body and make ad hoc plans as I go along instead.

But these weeks leading up to Christmas scare me a little. So much to cram in – so little time. There is of course the practical things like buying Christmas gifts, meeting up with everyone before going home and the parties. It’s all fun although usually hectic. But I add another element of stress myself; the food. I know it’s silly, but a large part of my associations with Christmas come from the smells and tastes of my childhood Christmases.

So in the next seven weeks I want to drink plenty of glögg, make ginger biscuits, some sweets and eat said ginger biscuits with Stilton (do try it if you haven’t already – it’s divine!) and make (and eat) Jansson’s temptation and meatballs at least once.

The weekend is here…

chinatown

I’m a bit of an on-off kind of person. Either I’m super busy socially going like a whirlwind from one thing to the other and love the pace of it. Or I’m at home a couple of evenings in a row, not in the mood to go out, watching a good series on my iPad, cooking every night and going to bed early. Then I’m in the mood for another stretch of busy busy.

To mix these up so that every week was in moderation would be far too sensible (and boring).

So this week I spent Monday evening baking for the office (with one eye on the telly watching the last episode of Tom Kerridge’s proper pub food), Tuesday I met up with my friend Laura for drinks, Wednesday I had dinner and bubbly with the girls at Randall & Aubin in Soho (and lunch at Flatiron, reviews to come) and yesterday it was birthday drinks for Ro! Tonight I’m having a few girls over for dinner, tomorrow I’m going out for cocktails and on Saturday I’m having brunch with a friend from Uni I haven’t seen for a while. And maybe I’ll squeeze in some shopping too. Although this might sound a bit exhausting I know I can cope with it all so long as I get to sleep in on the weekend. If I have to set my alarm on Saturdays and Sundays though I feel like I missed out on a whole weekend.

I am not a morning person so making up for the rough awakenings of the alarm clock Monday through to Friday is the reward of sleeping until I wake up and lazy around in my PJs before starting the day at the weekends.

Have a great weekend!

Best day of the week

Grönby, Sweden, the Autumn of 2012.

Friday again. The only day a week I seem to come up for air this autumn. I mean, it was just Monday, wasn’t it?!

This week has been busy work wise (and in general) and I am looking forward to a weekend of cooking and baking. With more recipes up my sleeve I also promise to blog more next week!

Have a great weekend!
